INVITATION : Indefinite hunger strike against the IT Act Sec 66A at Jantar Mantar From Dec 08 by Aseem Trivedi and Alok Dixit

Date: 08 Dec 2012, Timing: 12 PM onwards

Of late, there have been several cases of arrest of innocent civilians for posting harmless comments
and updates on social networking sites which “hurt the sentiments” of few people under the
draconian Section 66A imposed by the government of India.
In year 2008 there were eight laws which were passed without a debate and the IT Act section 66A
was one of them. Sources also reveal that this act is a complete replica of the ‘Post Office Act’ of
United Kingdom and has wide powers to put anyone behind the bars for any post or comment on
any social networking site which might “hurt” the sentiments of any person or organization. Many
activists and other common people demand to abolish this law from the country which is assumed
to be ’Democratic’.
This issue has sensitized the people enough to raise their voice against it and the government is now
expected to address these genuine voices.
Aseem Trivedi, cartoonist, who himself has been a victim of this  “law”, was arrested and  charged
with IT Act Section 66A on 8th September 2012. To oppose this act, people came up to protest it by
holding a campaign to support ‘freedom of speech’. But repeated arrests like those of two girls from
Mumbai, a professor from Kolkata, a Puducherry industrialist, etc. for posting allegedly "offensive"
material on social networking sites have created a panic among internet users. Hence to bring back
that ease and freedom of being ‘democratic’, the government is sought to declare IT Act Section 66A
as unconstitutional as it completely violates the article 19 of Indian constitution (Freedom  of
Speech). The IT Act Section 66A holds enough power to put anyone behind bars.

To voice  our message to the government, Aseem Trivedi and Alok Dixit are fasting from 8th December 2012 at Jantar Mantar, Delhi.  We invite you to join our protest against 66 A.

Your presence is solicited on this occasion.
